Understanding Human Emotion and its Role in Interviews

Jun 08, 2022

We don’t need to be seasoned psychologists to be successful in the interview process but having a good understanding of how human emotion plays a role, is essential to one’s success.

Awareness of our Own Emotions, as well as Those of Our Interviewer, is Key

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage our emotions in a positive way to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict.

Higher emotional intelligence helps us to find our strongest internal motivators, which can reduce procrastination, increase self-confidence, and improve our ability to focus on a goal. It also allows us to create better networks of support, overcome setbacks, and persevere with a more resilient outlook.

Developing emotional intelligence goes a long way when one is preparing for and performing during important job interviews.  Here is one of the first exercises we use to help CMS candidates to start developing their own EQ awareness:

“Think about and write down answers to these questions

Who am I?

What are my strengths?

What are my weaknesses?

What are my values?

What are my passions?

What are my biggest achievements in life?”

Questions like these are designed to help one to delve deep, to start the process of understanding and clearly articulating their current self-awareness.  And most importantly, with the guidance of their CMS Program Coach, provides the opportunity to alter that awareness resulting in a more confidence and a positive outcome through the interview process.
